In the country of Pruburn, people are born Powerful or Powerless. They live separate but equal. Sixteen-year old Elara is Powerless. She hates it. Her best friend, Luca, is a Powerful, and she lives in his shadow of popularity and opportunities.
When a deadly explosion strikes Pruburn, Elara and Luca are at the center of it. However, moments before it happens, Elara has an unusual premonition to save a stranger, afrail boy named Everest. Unscathed, they all survive, only to understand the attack was just the beginning.
A group of people called the Resentfuls are determined to wipe out all of the Powerless. Elara and Luca find themselves in the midst of a brewing war, joining a secret organization in Pruburn that are allying to fight against the enemy.
As tensions rise in the country and tensions rise between Luca and Everest. Elara discovers a deadly secret about herself. A secret that could change the tide of the war or kill everyone she’s ever loved.
